The all-matte black Colt XM177E2 Retro Carbine (aka XM177E2 Commando) 20+1 semi-automatic is a faithful reproduction of the original 1960’s-era classic Colt 629. It, in turn, was an improvement over the Vietnam-war era (and battle tested) CAR-15 Model 607 submachine gun. The 607 wasn’t accepted for service, so Colt further refined the design with a more robust stock, simplified forend and more. This high-end XM177E2 even has the same US government roll marks as the 629 making this a wonderful collector’s favorite.
At heart is a 16.1” length barrel with a 1 to 12” twist ratio. More specifically, the gun has a compact-length 11.5” barrel with a welded classic-style extended flash hider that brings the total length to a fixed 16.1”. On top, you get an A1 fixed front and rear sight. There is also a perfectly placed safety selector switch.
In back is a four-stop squeeze lever collapsible synthetic stock that means you can set overall length from 32.0” to 35.5”. The stock is durable and light, but the butt still has about the same contact area as the older A2 buttstocks. Below you get an A1-style straight boot pistol grip. The gun ships standard with a 20-round USGI magazine.
The gun weighs 6.5 pounds. Colt XM177E2 Retro Carbines are Made in USA at Hartford, Connecticut.
