The Savage Stevens 555, Stevens 555 Compact and Stevens 555 E are nice-looking well-optioned affordable over/under shotguns. The Stevens 555 guns have manual extractors. The otherwise same Stevens 555 E adds auto shell ejectors and beautiful detailed scrollwork on the receiver.
The 555s are affordable over-under shotguns, but they are still nicely thought out with many features you’ll certainly want, appreciate and enjoy. For starters, the standard 555 and 555 E come in the five gauges: 12-gauge, 16-gauge, 20-gauge, 28-gauge and .410-gauge. These can be further grouped into 28” and 26” barrel lengths. But all share the 14.57” length-of-pull, chrome-lined carbon steel barrels and five choke tube set. They also share semi-gloss finished silver colored aluminum receivers. And, again, the 555 E models feature laser-engraved filigree ornament detailing.
For 28” barrel lengths, we have the 12-gauge and 16-gauge. With extractors, they measure 45.3” overall and weigh 6.2 pounds. With ejectors, they measure 45.5” and weigh 6.5 pounds.
The 20-gauge, 28-gauge and .410-gauge over/unders use 26” barrels. With extractors, they measure 43.3” overall and weigh 5.5 pounds. With ejectors, they are 43.5” overall. The ejector-equipped 20-gauge and 28-gauge weigh 5.9 pounds while the lighter .410-gauge is only 5.6 pounds. These low weights are good for their price and make them easy to swing fast and accurately.
There is also a 555 Compact extractor version of the 20-gauge, 28-gauge and .410-gauge over/unders. These have 24” barrels, a 13” length-of-pull and weigh 5.0 pounds. The 20-gauge measures 39.6” overall while the 28-gauge and .410-gauge are 39.2” long.
If you’ve been counting, this makes 13 over/under choices between 555, 555 E and 555 Compact models. Regardless of model, all 555s are ambidextrous. The gun’s forend and semi-pistol grip buttstock are made of Turkish walnut, or, as Savage calls it, Imperial walnut. Whatever the name, it sports a fetching oil finish, and it’s beautiful.
The 555s have laser-cut checkering on the forend and grip. They have a single-selectable trigger so you can decide which barrel to fire in which order while in back is a manual tang safety. A very nice value feature are the auto shell ejectors rather than extractors that are common on many guns in this price class. When you break a gun with extractors, spent casings stay in the gun but are in easy reach. With ejectors, the casings fling free.
All have a vent rib and mid-rib bridging between the barrels. All Stevens 555 E models feature five interchangeable chokes, meaning Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder (F, IM, M, IC, C) choke tubes.
While you might assume Savage’s over/under shotguns are made in USA, they are in fact Made in Turkey by Kofs Makina in the southwestern part of that beautiful country.
