The Remington 870 MCS 12-gauge pump-action shotgun is a member of the Remington 870 family of shotguns and is a successor to the 870 P (Police) series that entered production way back in 1950. MCS stands for Modular Combat System, which is nicely self-descriptive. In essence, it has various components one can configure as needed.
Remington usually has multiple models within a specific declension such as the five variant 870 DM. But the 870 MCS comes in just one model because it comes with everything. The 12-gauge MCS has a 3” shell chamber. Remington fashions its receivers from an 8.5-pound block of steel it methodically machines to final form.
MCS features a trio of barrels measuring 10”, 14” and 18”. MCS comes with a cylinder choke for the 10” and Rem-choke system (including Improved Cylinder, Modified, Rifled chokes) for the two longer barrels. The 10” has no sights. The 14” has a bead sight while the 18” has rifle sights.
The longer the barrel, the longer the magazine tube underneath thanks to a pair of magazine extension tubes that ship standard with the gun when new. Thus, the magazine capacity increases from 3 to 5 to 6 making capacity 3+1, 5+1 and 6+1 for the respective barrels. Overall length with the three barrels is 20.25”, 33.25” and 37.75” respectively. The 10” barrel version achieves its extreme short span thanks to a stockless rubber pistol grip that would look almost perfect on a revolver. Naturally, with the different barrels, longer ones mean an increase in weight. It goes from 6.2 pounds to 6.7 pounds to 7.5 pounds.
The 870 MCS comes standard with both a rubber pistol grip and a collapsible stock. You can use either. There’s an accessory rail above the ejection port. The forend includes two 2x low-output white lights. For increased precision, it uses twin action bars to guide the sliding movement. Remington seems to have thought of everything!
The gun looks all black and has a tough Parkerized finish.
The 870’s trigger guard has both an action-bar safety release (in front) and a fire safety (at back), and the magazine release is nearby, just in front of the beveled magazine well.
Remington shuttered production in 2020. But until then, Remington 870 MCS pump-action shotguns were Made in USA.
