The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) is the federal agency responsible for enforcing gun laws. The US laws regulating firearm sales are mostly contained in the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 178 - Commerce in Firearms and Ammunition. The ATF has the laws excepted into a series of Frequently Asked Questions. States and local governments have the ability to make laws affecting gun ownership.
