The new for 2018 PTR Industries 9 CT is a roller-blowback operated 9 x 19 mm semi-automatic HK SP5 type gun. The 9 CT comes from Aynor, South Carolina, 30 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. PTR has been in business almost two decades, and its initialism stands for the company’s “Proven, Trusted, Refined” design philosophy.
In line with this philosophy, PTR has gone from being a manufacturer with many parts procured from other vendors to being mostly vertically integrated. Thus PTR retains more control over the quality of its arms.
Back to the gun. The PTR 9 CT has a steel upper receiver that mates to a polymer lower one. These guns famously use a roller-delayed blowback. This system is heavier, but smoother with a lower recoil than an AR-type gun.
When used as outlined in the owner’s manual, the gun has a break-in period and is quite dependable. However, it’s easy to ignore the owner’s manual and just start shooting, which can lead to unexpected jams. So please resist the temptation to just start shooting and read the owner’s manual.
The 5.05 pounds of equipment is encompassed in an overall length of 17.6”. Atop this is a 4.5” long top rail for optical sights or other accessories. But the gun ships with traditional iron sights. Further back is a swivel adaptor sling point.
The 9 x 19 mm nitride treated 3-lug barrel has a 1 to 10” twist and is 8.86” long. On the muzzle end is a ½”x28 TPI thread. As is fairly typical of this type of gun, trigger pull is 9 pounds. Nearby are both a paddle magazine release and a push button one too!
Most of the barrel sits in a short black aluminum handguard with M-LOK slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions.
