AK Magazine Capacity

The standard AK-47 magazine capacity is 30 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo. The signature curve of AK magazines is designed to aid in smoothly guiding the tapered 7.62x39mm cartridge into the chamber. Various other capacities are available: 10-round (for compliance, where applicable), 20-round (shorter, more maneuverable), 40-round extended mags, and 75-round AK drum mags.

Do AKs Use Clips?

No, AKs use magazines and are not clip-fed. There are AK stripper clips, but these are for speed-loading magazines in combination with a stripper clip guide or magazine loading tool. Sometimes military surplus ammo will come already on clips. So while a clip can be used to aid in loading an AK-47 magazine, AKs do not use clips.

AK-47 Magazine Types

AK mags have been made with a variety of different materials:

  • Steel: Very durable, but heavier than other materials. Globally, these are the most common AK magazines, as they are standard-issue for many militaries.
  • Bakelite: AK owners often seek these out as collectibles. They are lightweight, but more brittle than other materials.
  • Polymer: In the U.S. civilian market, these are the most common AK mags. They are often reinforced with steel inserts for durability while maintaining an overall light weight.
