What is a Bolt-Action Shotgun?

A bolt-action shotgun uses the same principles as a bolt-action rifle. Once a round is fired, the bolt handle is lifted and pulled to the rear by the shooting hand, ejecting the spent shell. To chamber the next round, the bolt handle is pushed forward and back down.

Are Bolt-Actions Good for Hunting?

Bolt-action shotguns are very good for certain types of hunting. Not as fast as a pump-action or semi-auto, they are more specialized for turkey and deer hunting, where accuracy and shot placement are key.

For deer, they are popular for hunting in states where traditional rifles are restricted, using a rifled barrel combined with a sabot slug. For turkey, the smoothbore is tuned for tight groups and enhanced accuracy. The Savage 212 (12 gauge) and Savage 220 (20 gauge) are popular modern models designed specifically for this kind of hunting, equipped with an optics rail and detachable box magazine.

Why Are Bolt-Action Shotguns Less Common Today?

Bolt-action shotguns were widely produced from the 1930s to the 1980s by companies like Mossberg, Marlin, and Stevens. Their popularity declined as pump-actions and semi-autos offered faster follow-up shots and higher magazine capacities. Today, they are popular with collectors and are used by some hunters looking for precision shotguns.

How Accurate Are Bolt-Action Shotguns With Slugs?

A bolt-action shotgun with a rifled barrel is essentially a short-range rifle, and is considered very accurate out to about 150 yards. In certain states, traditional rifles are not legal for deer hunting, making a bolt-action slug gun the perfect solution. The solid bolt lock-up and ability to mount optics make them a trusted choice compared to other shotguns.

It should be noted that a smoothbore shotgun using rifled slugs is viable, but not nearly as accurate as a rifled slug gun.
