AK Furniture Parts
AK furniture is usually made from wood, polymer, metal, or composite materials. There are four basic components: stock, pistol grip, upper handguard, and lower handguard. The handguards are sometimes referred to as forends or forearms.
AK furniture doesn’t directly affect the gun’s operation. The furniture components determine ergonomics, appearance, and modularity. The same gun can swap furniture depending on intent and cosmetic preference without changing anything about the functionality and dependability.
- AK Stock (Buttstock): Located at the rear of the rifle, the AK-47 stock dictates shoulder placement, aids in aiming, and helps absorb recoil. An AK folding stock works the same way, it just folds up along the side or the underside of the rifle to make it more compact. There are also telescoping AK stocks available, which serve the same purpose as a folding stock but slide backward and forward instead of off to the side or underside. AK pistols don’t have a buttstock. However, there are AK short-barrel rifles (SBR) that have a buttstock. SBRs are an NFA item, so be sure to check all regulations before modifying your firearm.*
- AK Pistol Grip: Positioned behind the trigger, this piece extends down from the receiver and is separate from the AK’s stock. Some have finger grooves or storage inside the grip for small tools.
- Lower AK Handguard: This provides the grip for the support hand at the front of the rifle. Located below the gas tube and barrel, they sometimes include vertical grips or heat shields.
- Upper AK Handguard: Located above the barrel and gas tube, it often matches the look and material composition of the lower handguard.
- Modern AK handguards often feature M-LOK, Picatinny, or KeyMod rail systems, cooling cuts or heat shields, and may have integrated handgrips or hand stops.
