AR Buttstocks
The buttstock is the rear part of the rifle that rests against your shoulder and helps provide stability. The type you choose will also affect comfort, recoil management, and shooting positions. Features to consider include the length of pull (LOP), storage compartments for tools, sling mounts (usually QD or “quick-detach”), and buttpads for felt recoil.
- Adjustable/Collapsible: These are very common on AR-15s. They are a telescoping style that slides along the buffer tube to adjust length of pull (LOP) and overall length (OAL).
- Fixed: These are one solid length with no adjustment for length of pull (LOP).
- Precision (PRS): These have an adjustable length of pull (LOP) and an adjustable cheek rest for precision rifles.
AR Handguards
On an AR, handguards serve two functions. The first is protecting your hands from barrel heat. The other is to provide a platform for attaching accessories like sights, lights, lasers, and foregrips or handstops. The handguard is essentially a sleeve that goes all the way around the barrel. Attachment points are situated at one, some, or all of the following positions: 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock, and 9 o’clock.
- Picatinny (MIL-STD-1913): This is an attachment system that uses raised, robust ridges. They are generally universal but heavier than other systems.
- M-LOK: This lightweight system uses slots for accessory attachment, and are widely available on a number of handguards and accessories.
- KeyMod: An older system, this uses circular cutouts that resemble keyholes as attachment points.
Handguard lengths vary by barrel length or intended purpose.
- Carbine (7"): For many AR pistols and Short Barrel Rifles (SBR), also found on some older setups.
- Mid-Length (9"): Common on 14”-16” barrels.
- Rifle-Length (12”-15”): Great for longer builds, this offers more room for accessories.
- Full-Length/Extended (15”+): Offers the most versatile support-hand grip options and maximum accessory space.
AR-15 Grips
The pistol grip positions the firing hand. The angle of the grip will directly affect the comfort and ergonomics, especially during sustained shooting. Key factors to consider include:
- Grip Angle: Modern grips often feature a more vertical angle for improved wrist comfort.
- Texture: More aggressive texturing provides a better grip, especially when wet or wearing gloves.
- Storage Core: Located in the base of the grip, these allow for storing small tools or batteries.
- Beavertail Extension: Provides a more natural grip by filling the space behind the receiver.
